Roxbury's SDF Partners with Habitat for Humanity's Hearts and Hammers Gala

SDF at Hearts and Hammers Gala

SDF at Hearts and Hammers Gala

Roxbury High School's new Structural Design and Fabrication program continues to support the community. The course that covers a wide variety of topics including construction, carpentry, architecture, and design allows students to put their knowledge and skills to work here at home in Roxbury and last Saturday members of the SDF program and RHS took part in Morris Habitat for Humanity's Hearts and Hammers Gala at the Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph. This is Morris Habitat's largest annual fundraiser with over 500 people in attendance this year, the most yet. This year's event celebrated the 35th Anniversary of Morris Habitat for Humanity and the work they have done to build affordable housing in the greater Morris County community.

Roxbury's SDF program worked with the Habitat staff and volunteers to design and build two items for the event. The first was a photo booth that showed the layers of a house being built at various stages of the building process. Showing studs, sheathing, foam insulation, and vinyl siding.

The other project was a model home the students built that was featured on the center of the stage next to the speakers throughout the evening. Students worked to give the home a high level of detail, complete with lines where siding would be, a porch, a garage, and even a small doorknob. Roofing shingles manufactured by GAF were used to showcase GAF, one of the largest and most loyal sponsors of Morris Habitat for Humanity.

Roxbury Schools Go Global with Annual Multicultural Expo

The Roxbury High School Dining Hall was again alive with color, food, performances, spectators, and energy at the fifth annual Global Hi-5 Multicultural Expo on February 20th. More than 400 students, organizations, families, and community members came out to take part in this festive event.

Marcia Cordeiro, one of the expo organizers, Roxbury staff member, and parent shared that this event is a way to "experience the gift of one HUMAN race and its multisensory cultural diversity in CommUNITY." The event invited tourists to get their passports stamped while their five senses were tantalized through international expressions of cuisine, music, arts, crafts, costumes, dance performances, and so much more! In addition to the 16 country expos (filled with artifacts, food, brochures, fun-facts, posters, pictures, and instruments, etc.) to visit there was continuous entertainment going on.

This collaborative event is organized by the Roxbury School District staff, students, parents, and community members. Roxbury Schools participating organizations included the Eisenhower Middle School and Roxbury High School Spanish Clubs, French Club, RoxTHON, and Roxbury's Robotics Program, and Roxbotix Team. These organizations are run by advisors and student members.

"We would like to express our heartfelt thank you for attending our 5th Global Hi-5 Multicultural Expo. We would especially like to thank all of our "Countries" and groups that participated to make this a great event. Without their love of their respective countries and cultures, this great country and this event would not be possible. We feel it is important to show our diversity, not just in Roxbury, but in the world. We are all one people who share a love of different cultures." Rox-THON gets their Flock on

Flocking is back at Roxbury! It will begin this fall and continue until the ground freezes, before resuming next spring; all weather dependent. While the fundraiser remains the same, the organization bears a new name. Putting more of an emphasis on our local community, Roxbury High School's mini-THON will now be known as Rox-THON. It is the same group of students working towards the same cause, however, a majority of our proceeds will now stay here in Morris County.

Starting this year, donations will go to Goryeb Children's Hospital (Morristown, NJ) and 30% of those proceeds will support pediatric cancer research and medical bills through Four Diamonds (Penn State Children's Hospital). Roxbury High School will also host its 7th Annual event to fight childhood cancer on Friday, March 13, 2020.

"Flocking is super simple! Flocking is when you harmlessly prank your friends by signing up for us to put a flock of plastic flamingo s on their lawn," explained Captain Holly Van Ness, a senior at the school.

If you would like to flock-a-friend, you can choose how many flamingos you want to migrate to your friend's yard for up to 48 hours. A small flock of only 10 flamingos is only $15, a medium flock of 30 for $25, or you can choose a large flock of 50 flamingos for $35. If you have a special occasion, you may also choose to request a specific date for an additional $15. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Lake Hopatcong Foundation urges lakefront property owners to order numbered dock signs

The non-profit Lake Hopatcong Foundation is urging lakeside residents to order dock number signs to post on their docks in case of emergencies. The signs are $30 each.

According to the foundation, these attractive, weatherproof aluminum signs are blue with white reflective numbers. They do not contain any personal information and can be mounted to a dock, boathouse, post, or tree. B-SAFE dock numbers are designed to help emergency personnel efficiently respond by land or water. A posted number can also provide an easy way for friends to locate a dock.

Order by June 1 for delivery on or about July 1.

According to the foundation, Each lakefront property has been assigned a unique dock number, or "lake address," which is linked to the 9-1-1 street address. Lakefront property owners may voluntarily purchase and post a B-SAFE dock number where it can be easily seen from the water. If an emergency occurs, an accurate location can be reported using the nearest dock number as a reference point. If an emergency occurs on the water, ice or land CALL 9-1-1. Locate the nearest dock sign and provide the number to the 9-1-1 operator. Emergency resources will be sent to that location. Landowners can report a water emergency and the 9-1-1 operator will be able to translate the street address to a water location. To order, or for more information, click here. After 23 years aiding Roxbury's 'working hungry', Wald couldn't be happier

Ham is on the mind of Social Services Director Janet Wald. Hams. And not turkeys. "People want hams for Easter. They just had turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lasagnas are OK too, but we really need hams," she said, while busily working in her office at 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, Thursday. Always thinking ahead, Wald, who has been the director for 13 years, is planning Easter dinners for her families- or clients- whom she refers to as the "working hungry" in Roxbury Township. And, there are many, the Boonton native says. Per month, she serves just about 200 families. That means everything from toiletries and food stuff to gently used - or sometimes new with tags- clothing.

Walmart gift cards and gas gift cards are another big request, she says, and she works tirelessly, year round, to keep her clients as comfortable in the otherwise mostly affluent county as possible. In a typical month, the Roxbury Food Pantry gives out more than 400 bags of food to the client families.

"Right now, we have about 180 families. When you add all the warm bodies together, you are talking about 300 people and change though. These are working hungry people. They are just getting by paying their rent and their electric bills," Wald said. Removing needy families from the federal food stamps program is another problem her clients face, she said. "Under the new laws, if you get a 10 percent pay raise, they cut your food stamps."

And, her department's support expands beyond just those who get around on two legs. "We have 60 cats and 47 dogs that we support with food as well," she said. "The pets are part of the families too." The Petco store and St. Hubert's in Chatham Township donate food, she said.

The department relies on the ample support it receives from the community- donations come in all the time while the department is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays- but they also do things the old-fashioned way. "We have coin collecting cans all over town, like at Luigi's and the Roxbury Diner and Roxbury Bagels. We collect all the coins, and use them to buy gift cards for our families," she said.

The department is open three days per week from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wald said.

"We are a family here. We have one volunteer who is 92 years old. They are here for our clients. They know all of our clients. We have high school kids who volunteer time here. Community service hours are done here. The school's (Rotary) Interact Club helps out. We have special education students who come once a week. They check the expiration dates on the cans, and they roll coins and sort pens and markers," she said. "We help them, and they help us. I try and involve as many kids as I can. They need to gain skills to transition to the world outside of school, and this is good practice," she said. "It's kind of like on the job training for them. They get hands on experience and they learn humanity and compassion. That's what's needed here," she said.

Ongoing continual needs, she said, are a vast majority of everyday products, including toilet paper, tissues, paper plates, coffee (in cans), tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, feminine products, sugar (in small bags), laundry soap and dish soap. "If you can't eat it, you can't buy it with food stamps, so that's why a lot of these products that most of us take for granted are in need," she said. "We are talking about things like baby wipes and tooth paste." Click here to read more about Janet her work with Roxbury Social Services from the Roxbury Register.

The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes. Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country. This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

LHF Block Party seeks vendors and sponsors  - May 9

The seventh annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party, is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Hopatcong State Park, 260 Lakeside Blvd., Landing, N.J. Hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, the event gives businesses and organizations a chance to showcase their work for thousands of guests. The day also features entertainment, numerous food options, live demonstrations, boat and mini-train rides, and an activity area for children.

"There's nothing quite like it, said Lee Moreau, event co-planner. "The Block Party has become an annual must-attend event for everyone who wants to celebrate the Lake Hopatcong area and learn more about the people and places that make it so attractive."

Vendors will have ample space to display their goods or services and food trucks will be accommodated in a designated area. Spaces are limited and typically sell out by mid-March, according to Moreau, who recommends early registration. Booth space is available for businesses, crafters, organizations and non-profits, with costs ranging from $25 to $350. Discounts are in place for entities based in Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mt. Arlington or Roxbury, as well as for those who register by February 29. Click here to read more from Lake Hopatcong News.

'A Taste of Roxbury' on horizon as Roxbury Chamber of Commerce begins busy year - May 18

It's the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce's biggest annual fundraiser, and it's just right around the proverbial corner. When the chamber met on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Outback in Ledgewood, chamber Past President Linda Dora said this year's installment of "A Taste of Roxbury" is coming up. It is planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 18 and will be held at Roxbury High School in Succasunna. "This is our big one. This is by far our biggest fundraiser of the year," Dora said, estimating that 250 people, or more, turn out to try offerings prepared by many different eateries in the township. This is the 14th annual event, and Dora said it was once held at the Day's Inn on Route 46 in Ledgewood. "We outgrew that place pretty quickly," she noted. The "all you can eat" event is $30 per ticket. Beverages and additional refreshments will be offered for purchase. Tickets are available at the Roxbury Recreation office, located at 72 Eyland Ave., Succasunna, or at roxburynjchamber.org/taste/ . Tickets must be purchased in advance and will not be sold at the door. Click here to read more about this event and others from the Roxbury Chamber of Commerce from the Roxbury Register.
